Hey everyone so last night I removed the divider in my 40g tank with my 2 EBJD's in it. I originally set up this divider because the bigger of my two EBJD's liked to pick on the smaller one, there was no lip locking at this point only subtle fin nips and a lap around the tank every few hours. But now that the smaller of the two is the same size as it's counterpart they had a standoff last night which ended up in a lockjaw that lasted for about 5 minutes, they kept puffing up and circling each other and continuing the battle, after the scrap was over the original little one had a little fleshy lip, I'm just wondering if this is typical spawning behavior between a male and female and that I should leave them together but just in a larger tank or if it's a territorial dispute of males, iv never raised 2 at the same time so this behavior is new to me, any help would be appreciated.

Sounds like two males too me. Put them in a bigger tank or separate them. The fighting will most likely continue.

Are they big enough to be vented? Iv never had the chance to vent one of my fish and I'm considering trying with these guys.

What makes you think they are males? One seems a lot less eager for food and displays a faded coloration on its side, it's always been like this but who knows
