the majority of people working in pet stores don't have a clue sadly, you're doing the right thing with the water changes; keep changing and doing readings every couple of days until you can level it.

I used to think people exaggerated Oscars and nitrates, I guess its one of these things that you don't really believe until it happens!

Your ebjd should hopefully perk up if you can get the nitrates back to 40ppm.
Thank you convict, you've been a great help! I'll keep up with the heavy water changes and see where it goes from there. Should I be vaccing gravel every time? Cause I've pretty much cleaned it out Completely lol. Or can I just keep dropping water and adding water... I have a huge snail infestation and they're living under the sand/substrate during the day I wonder how much waste they put out and how much they're contributing to this issue

No worries mate, we're all here to help! Gravel vaccing is highly recommended, a lot of detritus and crap gets trapped there, is it bare bottom or a thin layer?

Also, the snail population could be very suspicious here; have a check on google for MTS snails, they have been known in large populations to crash aquarium cycles with waste, better safe than sorry!

Yea I've been coming out at 2am every night clearing them off the glass, taking about 60 out a night but they breed like jack rabbits lol. But yes I've been gravel vaccing like crazy and no more waste came up yesterday and I cut back on feeding here's a pic of my poor EBJD he's lost some of his intense color and he's just sitting by the heater

Snails actively contribute to the bioload, which could explain your massive upsurge in nitrates; alongside existing stock.

There are numerous ways to attack them, the best ive found is to add either yoyo loach or clowns; which you could potentially do temporarily until the problem is resolved, before removing them. Other remedies include cutting down on feeding your fish, thus reducing the nutrients available to the snails; continue with vacuuming. There are manual methods such as putting veg in then removing it in the morning covered with snails.

Will see if anyone else chimes in, they might have better solutions

Good, already picked up 2 yoyo loaches to help out with it and I'm going to throw in cucumber and cabbage tonight to trap and see what I get in the morning, ty

My friend had the same problem with snails, it was ridiculous, the glass would just get covered in snails. Added some Assasin snails(Clea helena) just 3-4 of them and they destroyed the infestation in a matter of like 10 days.

Would I then have a assassin snail infestation? Lol. Just a thought. It's funny cause these guys only come out at night and cover my glass and driftwood. Do you think the yoyo loach would kill the assassin snails though?

The yoyo loach will supercede all most likely. Assassin snails are hit or miss for me, some were fantastic hunters; others were lazy or just couldnt keep up with the exploding mts.

I'm pretty sure the assassin snails wont breed for you, also I'm not sure if the loach will eat it. all i know is that it worked great for my friend.
