My 4-5" EBJD seems to have stopped eating suddenly yesterday, and I noticed some white stringy poo. Other than that, he seems okay, mostly hides under a log, but swims around the tank every once in a while. I have no experience treating sick fish.

Should I give it a couple days and see if he improves or is that risky? I'd rather not move him to a small tank if I don't have to so I don't stress him out (and I don't exactly have one set up). Is it ok to treat the whole tank with JPC? I have some other CA/SA cichlids, a BGK, and a bichir in there, and its a 135.

Thanks in advance for any help.

Okay, quick question, if I take a new 10-20 gallon tank and fill it with water from the old tank, and dump some filter media in there, will that be fine as far as cycling? Can I just move him in there?

that should work, plus a 10g will pay for itself with the money you're gonna save on meds. Try searching epsom salt, there os a thread about soaking food in a mix of epsom salt and distilled water. I tried and found it to be significantly better than metro.

^^^This! If you can get him to eat the food soaked in epsom salt it would prolly be your best starting point. If not there are also threads on threating the water volume with epsom salt. This is a lot more easily achieved in a much smaller tank. I waited to long to treat the EBJD in my avitar and lost him. He was my favorite fish! Good luck and keep up posted

My hospital tanks aren't cycled and I would suggest you start with clean water and a air stone and do daily water changes. The tank will never have a chance to cycle and you're giving the fish totally clean parasite free water.

View attachment 713257gets some prazipro and put in isolated tank ....make sure you follow dose with frequent water changes... more recent pic..but it can be done if caught..in time

my guy had it and I was able to heal him now hes fine eating like a pig...just jump on it asap...

salt helps as well ...ive heard salt baths help also ..reduce any light which can continue to stress fish out.

Salt (sodium chloride) and/or salt baths are NOT something that you want to use with a fish that is most likely already starting to retain fluid.

You can use established media to cycle a new tank, but there is no need to use dirty water from your tank, start with clean unchlorinated tap water. Prazipro is designed as a dewormer, IMO you would be better off using JPC which also contains praziquantel, as well as metro & acriflavine. You can also add magnesium sulfate (epsom salt) to the tank water which will act as a purgitive.

If at some point your fish will eat, then follow this treatment;

Good luck.

well its all speculation right rd. Salt bath is not the cure all but can assit or aid it monitored properly..So I will stick with what worked for me. Prazipro is just a suggestion there lots of mediciation out there but it sounds like the internal parasites are what is effecting the fish..

good luck ..with the process the lorax
