ebjd question for ya.

They are a morph and are passive. Go to tangledupincichlids.com. and check the stock list, excellent guy to deal with and has pristine fish.

I'm convince they're a color morph also. Great fish, just have to buy from a reputable source. Here's a pic of mine.

They are beautiful fish, just hard to keep.

I’ve been keeping Blue Dempseys for right at 2 years… I currently have 2 adults, 6 juvis and have bred two different lines of ‘Blue Gene’ Dempseys… Soon to be breeding Blue Dempseys…

The DNA research conducted (on the maternal side only) has concluded that for many generations back (I don’t recall off hand how far back) Blue Dempseys have nothing but Dempsey blood (DNA actually) in them…

No testing has yet been performed on the Father’s side… as I have been told this is much more expensive…

There have actually been two forms of tests done on the maternal side… one by Jeff Rapps several years ago with the then current technology… and again less than a year ago organized by a hobbyist named Cole with now current technology… both found the same results…

There will never be a test performed to “prove” they are a color morph… as the DNA tests are supposed to find all JD DNA… until they find a hybridization point… This point has yet to be found, but those convinced they are hybrids simply say we haven’t dug deep enough…

Therefore if they are hybrids… we will prove that… if they are a naturally occurring color morph we will go around in circles with no “final proof”… Therefore it is my opinion that those advocating they are a color morph have done plenty to verify our thoughts… the ball is in their court now…

Geobal is correct… there has never been a Blue Dempsey found in the wild…

Labiatus55 is also correct… since discovery these fish have experienced heavy inbreeding a selective breeding for visual qualities as opposed to health qualities… several hobbyists (myself included) are working together to diversify the bloodlines with high quality (wild caught when/where possible) Dempseys in attempts to revitalize the line…

Blue Dempseys pass their color in the exact same way Gold Dempseys pass theirs… are Golds hybrids too? They also pass the color the same way Albinos do… are all albinos hybrids? They also pass the same way as colors are well known to pass in many other Cichlids… so it seems very likely that they are a color morph… hybrids are NOT known to pass color genetics in this way… apply common sense here…

Please do not expect your docile little Blue Dempsey to stay that way forever though… I’ve found as Juvis they are quite docile… around 3” their aggression is born… by 7” they are as aggressive and as tough as a regular Dempsey… My 8” Blue male is dominant over my 8” regular male (which is an impressive fish who doesn’t hesitate to bully those he can).

I suck with a camera but these are the best pics I have…

very impressive pictures man. i just started working at my lfs and i asked the owner if he could order some ebjd's. he told me there hard to come by because the only breeder that he knows off will not let his "hybrid" secret out. i told my manager there just color morphs and he looked at me funny, after a lengthy conversation he too now thinks there a color morph and he might try and order one for me. im gonna give one a shot, i am nothing short of impressed when i see them.

If I could offer one piece of advice to anyone attempting to raise young Blue Dempseys... get a UV light...

I think thier a color morph, don't understand how their hybrids if thier still jds
I was talking to a really knowledgable lfs employee around here about ebjds, he said one of the main reasons you see ebjds more commonly now then the past, is typically the ones carrying that gene/color trait/w.e. tended to be smaller and therefor culled off by breeders, and it wasn't untill later when some people started to realize what they were dealing with when they grew them out, and even more so when they let them breed. I'm not sure how true this is or not, but this guy knows his stuff and knows breeders so I wouldn't be surprised to learn if it was indeed true.

they're deffinately a color morph. like an albino O, but different. from what i hear, though, they have genetic malfunctions (through continued inbreeding, no doubt), that make them hard to keep for more than a couple years. they aren't natural, and they aren't hardy.

they are beautiful, though.
