Yes salt can work well. But don't use salt on scaleless fish.
+1 on the water changes, do a very good gravel vac as well to lower organisms in the water, but why not use salt on scaleless fish? that is pretty much the only medication you can use with them, when i had ich before i had pictus (i think they are scaleless) and BGK in my tank so posted in other forum and they all said salt was fine just not the other harsh chemical medications, and they had no ill effects from the salt when i treated with it

Google Salt treatment for scaleless fish. You will see many sites say it not good.

Scaleless fish are very sensitive to anything that goes in the water. things effect them more and harder. It just adds stress. Salt in general effects the osmotic pressure of a fish. Also if not disolved first it can cause burns. But that's not too common.

Sure people have used salt on scaleless fish and they were ok. Others might not have been so lucky. I guess with the right balance it can be ok I don't risk it. I use Formalin·3 on my catfish.

By the way I like your name. My name is Sarah.

haha thats funny im always meeting people with the name Sarah :), n yeah i mean i always dissolve it first and only raise it at most 1tsp per gallon a day over a period of like 2hrs, so its probably because i did it slowly that it wasnt a problem, i was just saying that because i wasnt sure about it either when i first got ich in my tank and the people in the other forum said it was ok and IME it didnt do anything but that was the only time i had to do that with scaleless fish in the tank so i guess its not really good measure of what happens all the time, and does formalin-3 have any copper in it?

No formalin-3 does not have copper in it. It's pre-diluted form of formalin (37% formaldehyde solution). They use formaldehyde in fish farms even on our fish for food. Worked well on my Cory cats. I have a habbit of buying sick fish and nursing them to health. Cory cats DO NOT do well with copper I learned that the hard way. But thoes corys have recovered and are fine.

There is a big debate about salt use for fresh water aquariums mainly about keeping salt in an aquariums all the time. All and all it can help if used right.

yeah i was reading about salt all the time, n from what i read it helps to prevent things a little bit but then if they do still catch something then it is harder to get rid of because it is already resistant to the higher level of salt n the reason it works is like you said it changes the osmotic pressure and kills off the organisms, so now i only use salt when treating for something, n thats good about the formalin-3 (im thinking about getting another pictus so now can know what to treat it with if it shows any illnesses during quarantine) im just really paranoid about copper because i may one day use this tank for saltwater, and if a tank has ever had copper meds used in it, you cant EVER put corals or invertebrates into the tank unless you totally redo all the silicon and scrub EVERYTHING, thats how sensitive they are to copper traces in the water!
