It will most likely be in the top corner, food passes right by him, he won't eat. I haven't noticed white stringy poop though. What could be up? I'm hoping not parasites. If you think it is, is it contagious?? Thanks

I understand they are picky eaters. What are you feeding? Looks pretty healthy, nice colors.

I am feeding NLS and Omega One, it used to like API tropical pellets. It won't eat anything now. It is also on the bottom of the pecking order. He will get chased by the convict a good bit (unless he is in his corner. What should I do??? I'm guessing he's had to eat something because for the past 2 weeks this has been going on.

The aggression might be keeping the EBJD from eating. But how long has it been since it ate?

he's getting his ass kicked (hence always being at the surface and hiding in corners), and it's stressing him out plus he has Hexamita. All 3 of those thing will make a delicate fish like an EBJD stress to the point he will wither away and die.

Do you have another tank you can quarantine him for now?

I'll link you to the preferred treatment method....

EBJDs are very strange very fragile fish due to the EB mutation. Ive had 3 so far. My first was a robust awesome fish till about 4-5 inches then he became very reclusive and withered away. his only tankmates were 2 SDs a few treas and 1 largeBlood parrot that had a non functioning mouth.

A few months later i got 2 more one male and one female. I put both in a 55 with no other fish to grow out. the male around 4 in started beating on the female constantly so i moved him in to my Bps tank were a female firemaouth and female texas were growing out. At this time he was around 4-5 in and would get bullied buy the firemouth and texas half his sized. eventually he seemed to establish is territory but then he stopped eating and wasted away.

Now i just have the one female EBJD in her solo 55 were she acts like an oscar hungry as a pig and swimming all over.

IME for some reason they eventually become far too shy when place with other fish especially cichlids, to the point were they won't eat and slowly die. They should probably be kept solo or if your lucky in a pair.

This whole experience has made me begin to dislike mutated frail strains of fish like ebjds.

No more mutant strains for me

I actually just dealt with this problem myself. So this is pretty much the guideline that I followed.

First thing to ask is the fish with other fish in the tank and does it seem to be getting bullied? That's more of an obvious question so if not move on to the next question.

Second, how long as the fish been in the tank? Sometimes it takes a bit to get acclimated to a new environment. If more than week should not be an issue.

If both of the issues above does not apply then move on to the next step.

1.) Try feeding frozen blood worms. I have yet to have a fish that has not eagerly taken blood worms. If it does not take it, even after a few attempts spread out over the course of a few days, then I would treat for parasites.

2.) If the fish does eat blood worms (which at this point mine did) I would now look for a more stable alternative. The most recommended by MFKers are NLS & Omega One. However, IME, I couldn't get my EBJDs to take these pellets. If this doesn't work for you here's some other things you can do....

a.) starve and introduce pellets... If fish does not take repeat.
b.) try soaking the pellet in minced garlic + water solution, or juice from thawed blood worms prior to feeding
c.) have some dither fish that will eagerly attack the food to act as a guide for the little guy (if you do choose to do this, try and pick out a small group that is SMALLER than your ebjd and non-aggressive)
d.) try some other foods as well.... For me, I finally had success with Hikari Bio Gold and market shrimp

Hope this helps!!
