all fish are fragile(except convicts). Every fish if cared for properly won't die!! If your water quality is always taken care of you can't kill a fish. I have kept all "Fragile" fish FW and SW and none of died from being fragile? There is especially no fragile cichlid thats for sure.
I fully disagree.....All fish keepers lose fish that "just die"..Even in perfect conditions....Even humans "just die" sometimes...Not everything is wired for survival. Altum angels and haitensis are fragile as all heck......
I don't think it's got anything to do with "hand-picking good stock", it's the luck of the draw with good husbandry thrown in for good measure. My 2 came from ThatPetPlace.com online sight unseen. And we all know places like that don't generally have 'quality or well-bred' fish. Mine have grown like crazy and are doing awesome 4 months later. (knock on wood).

how big have they grown? i know another "myth" about these guys is they grow slower than regular JDs. im sure it also has something to do with feeding and WCs.
They were 3/4" total when I got them, if that. I just checked and I got them July 1st so guess I've only had them 3 mo and 1 wk. I got an accurate measurement 3 wks ago when I moved them-the bigger one was 4" and the smaller was was just over 3 1/2". I feed them a lot and keep nitrates under 5 ppm though. Someone else on another fourm did everything right with his and it never did grow much or do well. That's why I think it's probably the luck of the draw.
dont worry man...... i got it under control he will be moved to a much much bigger tank when the time has come, ive got plenty of tanks he would do well in right now, A) i am quarantining him and B)i would rather just put him in a smaller tank so i can do water changes every couple days on a smaller tank
yes genes has to do 100% of how the fish does
i would just rather handpick the fish, if it doesnt look good i wont get it if it looks good i will, especially with a fairly expensive fish like the ebjd

You are correct. EBJDs have a much slower growth rate than normal JDs. Feeding and water changes are important, but they are slow growers to begin with. I have heard that 3" is the magic mark for getting them to survive. AFter 3", thier survival rate goes way up. nc_nutcase is quite knowledgable about them if you need more info.
