EBJD

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
well i just went and bought a 65 gl and i do believe that i will go get the other two however i would really like some redhump geophgaus so i am trying to decide, but i am leaning toward the blues sense i already have one the same size the other two would just complete this tank plus like you said nut_nutcase to a hobbyist this could be the prefect choice :)

From experience i had 3 just regualr JD's and no matter what time or which one i could not put them all or even two in the same tank together. Mabey as babies it might be fine but one thing with JD's is once they hit a mature stage they get extremly aggressive. I think my best match was one of my JD's and an oscar they got along great.

Sorry I missed the pic requests... It's very difficult to get decent pics in my fishroom due to all the glare/reflections... I can only get close ups but the female hides whenever I get right up on the tank... The male is below (7")

In my expereince... 4 or males raised together having never met a female have about a 30% chance of working out after sexual maturity, and a 70% chance of a battle royal ending in death.

When I raise a brood as soon as a pair forms I seperate them from the rest...

But if you raise a handful of Blues in a large enough tank, when a pair forms they will be too busy preparing to spawn to kill others. In too small of a tank the others will not be able to excape the pairs territory and the male is likely to kill them.

I'm assuming your 65 gal is a 4' tank... and in my experience, when a pair forms in a 4' tank, IF they create a nest on one end or the other, the unpaired fish will have room to escape. IF the pair's nest is in the middle, the others are in trouble...

Personally, I would try it. But as soon as you see the first signs of pairing, remove the odd fish. But spotting this is sometimes hard. Many times I have seen the tougher fish (usually males) hang out together but shun the weaker fish (usually females). This may look like pairing, but obviously isn't. But if all the fish get along and hang out, then one day one of them doesn't seem welcome in the 'pack', it's best to get the odd fish out sooner rather than later.

I'll try to get a Blue x Blue pair pic soon...

Nice thread I have a 40 gal with a uv on it how many lil 2 inch ebjds could I put in there to grow out then put in my 265 with uv. The 265 tank has several 4 inch veija and 5 sevs in it. Oh the 40 is empty jus a grow out tank

Thank you for all the input, and very nice pics nutcase. Are there any dithers that would work with the EBJD even if they were to form a pair? Is there a way to sex them before they pair off? Oh and btw, the 65 is 3'X18"

I use Red Seprae Tetras as dithers for my lil Cichlids... This works for a while and when I see the Tetras starting to dissappear I move them to a different grow out tank. I'm not much of a fan of dithers for adult Cichlids. Big dithers take up room I would rather offer to Cichlids.

Visually sexing Blue dempseys is very difficult. I trust my own opinion better when based on behavior. And neither visual or behavior based sexing (IME) is reliable until the fish are sexually mature.

Lastly, in my opinion, Dempseys deserve a 48'x18" footprint or bigger. Using a smaller grow out tank is fine, but long term 3' tanks tend to cause bent spines in Dempseys.
