Hey all, I ended up with an EBJD yesterday. The day before I had taken my GF with me to the LFS when I was going to check out (and picked up) a delhezi bichir, and she fell in love with some small 1.5" EBJD's, well, they were $32 bucks there and that wasn't gonna happen. Then, yesterday at work at petsmart I noticed we had a couple new fish, Bolivian Rams, and Guess what? EBJDs for $9.99 each. Well, I got the biggest one that we had to make her happy, lil guy is right around 1".

I know that these fish are prone to randomly die when young, I currently have him sitting in a breeder net on the side of my 45 gallon, Water parameters 0 ammonia 0 nitrite 20ppm nitrate and 6.6 PH, does anybody with EBJD experience think those parameters will be sufficient?

Also, am I right to believe what I hear that these guys aren't nearly as aggressive as true JDs? Would you guys consider them about as aggressive as a firemouth or are they more like severums?

He's still a baby now, but I know he'll grow pretty quick - So I guess I wanted to ask if you guys think this stock list will work. When I move in a little over a year I'll be upgrading to a second 75 gallon, do you guys think this stock list would be okay with the proper filtration:

2 Senegal Bichirs
1 Delhezi Bichir
1 ABK
1 Opaline Gourami
1 Turquoise Severum
1 EBJD

If that wouldn't work I'd put the EBJD in the current 45 gallon as the centerpiece fish, this all assuming the little guy pulls it out and nothing crazy happens. Sorry for the novel, just figured i'd get opinions for all of these questions in advance :WHOA:

Had an ebjd with my serb pair till he reached 6" then died for no reason

Yeah EBJD do that too... Youre lucky if you can get him to a good size. They die, you cant help it.

from personal experience, its all about setting up the tank just right for them.

Sweet :P Thanks guys, here's to hoping the little guy doesn't randomly die on me before he gets a few inches at least

My ebjd never looks for trouble but when my nic gets too pushy the ebjd puts the nics in his place.

yeah with a EBJD thats 1" good luck... cause i got another one at that size and he didn't make it...

Yeah, Aparently we had ONE in the shipment about 2.5" and the guy who opened the box that morning got him :'( I didn't come in for my shift until 3pm

1" is really hard to judge quality. At this size almost all EBJD are pretty, and sell easy. So many EBJD are inbred, and so many problems people have are a result of inbreeding. The inbred EBJD ususally do not make it past 3". Not only that, if they do live they are subject to sunken eyes, bent heads, degeneration of the fins, etc. Inbrd EBJD also have much weaker and muted colour than outcross EBJD. The problem is that these fish only need to look pretty at 1-2", to be sold. The result is that the fish dies or looks like crap, and people loose faith in the entire breed, i know that i almost did. When you get a genetically strong one it is a totally different fish.
By the way they are not very agressive. I keep breeding pairs with other blue gene females, and rainbows, barbs, and other community fish. The EBJD will do best if it is "top dog" in the tank.
