EBJD

I too was gone from cichids for some time I still maintained a 35 hex with community fish. I bred JDs 30 years ago and was surprised to see all the new exotics available now like the EBJD. I just picked some up today. I had an experience years ago that is relevant to this discussion of a recessive trait that keeps even regular JDs from surviving. I had multiple tanks and mutliple JDs. I had bred some other cichlids successfully and felt I knew what I was doing. A pair of JDs spawned numerous times and I tried leaving the fry with the parents and tried transferring the fry to a flat but the fry always died off within 10 days like stated in this thread. I then set the female up with another male and after some time they spawned and the fry survived. I was at my LFS today and was told EBJD parents = EBJD fry but it sounds like I was misinformed.

Another unusual observation from years ago. My neighbor's neglected pool had tadpoles in it. All my SA cichlids (Oscars too) spit them out except all the JDs, they gobbled them up.

Here's pics of the new guys I just picked up. the seller did not breed them but bought them from his LFS out of business sale and he only had them for a week. They are in a 10 for now while I finish up my 135 stand and hood. They don't stay still longenough for a good pic

^ They look good I hope they grow nice for you.
I'm noticing there are not as many people selling ebjd right now.

hello .. so am i to the understanding of this.. ebjdxebjd= non viable fry ebjdxjd= viable fry that carry the blue gene or BGJD. Now .. if you pair up the ebjd with one of it's own fry later = a weakly genetic % of ebjd ? So .. you would like to pair it up with a non related BGJD ... that would be ideal. But can you ween out the weak genes by breeding pairs of your BGJD's together over generations .. or will the genes strengthen if you pair that original EBJD with later generations of its own fry ? or it's BGJDxBGJD fry? wow that's confusing .. sorry

thanks for the help

also.: the male EBJD i have is a buauty.. and all of them i had.. he was the best.. but they did grow out healthy.. never had a problem.. does this signify better genes.. as in the breeder before had already taken necissary steps to strengthen the line? They all were always very healthy fish ... from less than an inch big..

thanks
nate

I know this is an old thread, but I've really enjoyed reading it. I'm trying to start my own EBJD breeding program and am currently raising my second group of fry from a BGJDxBGJD pairing. I recently bought 2 adult EBJDs and am hoping to pair them with my BGJDs. I've toyed with the idea of trying to breed two EBJDs together just to see what happens, but have yet to find a female EBJD. Hopefully one of my fry from my BGJDs will be a female EBJD. I'm keeping a record of all the breedings.

I supose you believe in ufo's 911 cover ups and all that, iv got 2 pairs of EBJD'S that breed just like anyother egg laying American Cichlid . I also found out the hard way trying the EBM X JDF = EBJC / EBM (diff line ) x EBJC = 50% EBJD 50% EBJC. Stick all your 2" EBJD in one tank and let nature take it's course.

OK, this is one of the best articles on the subject. I have been breeding Blue Jacks for almost 5 years now, and most was learned by trial and error.
The problem is that people who have never bred Blue Jacks, read something somewhere and spread false information. The information in this article will get you on the right track.

wow you guys hit the nail on the head for me. i recently got 2 ebjds at about 1/2 an inch about a month ago. when i got them i asked the same exact question to my friend that i bought them from. she told me the same concept of the fry not being able to survive past ten days. i think its possible to breed an ebjd with another ebjd . im not a scientist but i think its a simple dominant or a duo-dominant gene due to every batch of fry ive heard of had about 25 - 50% of ebjds and bgjds

Well..this is all incredibly interesting. I'm currently in my 3rd year of an ebjdxbgjd breeding project started from 6 1/2inch ebjd's( From 2 different lines ). Then a few months later adding 6 jd's(also from 2 different lines) growing them out together and waiting for the top pair/pairs. Then crossing bgjd offspring. Now 3 years in, i've had my first 3 broods in the past 5 weeks from my #1 ebjdxbgjd pair. But.......have always been quite curious about infamous ebjdxebjd spawn. I also believe I have one of the also infamous ebjd females.
