I too was gone from cichids for some time I still maintained a 35 hex with community fish. I bred JDs 30 years ago and was surprised to see all the new exotics available now like the EBJD. I just picked some up today. I had an experience years ago that is relevant to this discussion of a recessive trait that keeps even regular JDs from surviving. I had multiple tanks and mutliple JDs. I had bred some other cichlids successfully and felt I knew what I was doing. A pair of JDs spawned numerous times and I tried leaving the fry with the parents and tried transferring the fry to a flat but the fry always died off within 10 days like stated in this thread. I then set the female up with another male and after some time they spawned and the fry survived. I was at my LFS today and was told EBJD parents = EBJD fry but it sounds like I was misinformed.
Another unusual observation from years ago. My neighbor's neglected pool had tadpoles in it. All my SA cichlids (Oscars too) spit them out except all the JDs, they gobbled them up.
Here's pics of the new guys I just picked up. the seller did not breed them but bought them from his LFS out of business sale and he only had them for a week. They are in a 10 for now while I finish up my 135 stand and hood. They don't stay still longenough for a good pic
