EBJD's and Tank size. Like some less conflicted opinions >.<

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
personally I havent seen any really big blues or any older then 4 years because from what I have read and heard that they arent a very hardy fish so if you start to fall back on tank maintenance that is when the problems will start other then that your 60tall should do just fine.

personally I wouldnt get one, but I would admire yours and everyone else's :D....

hehe, an LFS has two tiny 1.5" and one large 5", the 5" is $40 but its pretty beat up... Colors aren't that nice either im sure fed the right foods and a better habitat it would color up nicely.

Im thinking of ordering one from Jeff Rapps >.>

Your 60 tall will be absolutely fine. General feeling is a 55 is about perfect. Obviously helps if your mated pair do actually get along...

Glad you liked the site!

Thats exactly what im talking about, EBJD with a reg JD, then their first fry have a 40-50% EBDJ gene, then inbreed them. At least thats what i've come to understand.

Even better to outbreed them i.e. one of those babies gets outbred to a new unrelated blue. Works out more expensive, obviously, but will reduce problems associated with inbreeding and therefore make your strain more desirable.

I guess in terms of breeding stock it's all about potential. If the 5" fish is strong, the it's better to imagine what it would have looked like before it got a bit ragged as this will give you an idea of what its progeny will look like. If you aren't sure about the quality of the fish, walk away.

Rapps has reliably hardy fish. I bought one recently (cost me an arm and a leg!) and he's a tough little cookie, but nothing compared to my other two who came from a different source.

Actually the baby 1.5" are actually stunning... Im thinking of maybe just picking them up and letting them grow up together in the tank, that way I could choose one i prefer (They look the same now but, not sure of the guarantee they will look the same later) They are a light chromatic blue with very few markings, but with their size, i've seen fry pictures that looked the same and they grew into quite lovely fish.

One of them had a tiny nibble taken out of his fin, the two EBJD's actually pal around so I think they may get along for awhile as juvies in one tank, they are with some mixed african cichlids. The owner of the store also informed me he gets some nice one's from a local supplier and I just have to ask for them, up to 4.5" specimens or so.

But i kinda like the idea of growing out the two babies, we all love raising fish, im sure you get what i mean ;p

I grew my first two up togehter just like that and it was a breeze. They really aren't all that aggressive until they hit 3.5-4" and even then they're not too bad.

I agree. The only aggression my 6"er shows right now is an occasional mouthing of the larger oscar whenever it swims in between the blue and the glass.

Not even a ram or a bite, just kinda kisses it lol blue dempseys are basically lazy aggressors. :)
