anybody ever use this before? I really can't understand how a large air pump is able to push enough water to run a system like this.

I dont have a clue about this thing, but from what I can see in the photo, all you would need to get this thing spinning would be a small airstone.
The little cups in the middle of the drum could catch the air and would get so much trapped air in them that it would cause the barrel to spin around.

I still dont understand why theyd make it airpowered? You figure that thing gets all heavy from water and other gunk itll have a hard time turning over.

No, it works by an airlift pump http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Airlift_pump which needs more air than that.
