Economic loss from invasives in the Great Lakes

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
[to ray777] not from ohio, from pa, in erie right off the lake lol

As an informal update:

I have a colleague performing a study that pits Coho Salmon (introduced sport species{aka invasive}) against a native strain of Brook Trout, Coaster Brook Trout to be exact.

He is showing how the very Sport of fishing is its own worse enemy. So far the introduced/managed Coho Salmon are blitzing the competition like they were Micheal Phelps.

It doesn't take a long look to see that we are indeed creating the very problems we dispise.

In summary he is showing the DNR of WI that they are funding the stocking of (invasive) species that outcompete the Native species they set out to protect. Kinda screwy!

I live in the Pymatuning area of Pennsylvania, about 30 min away from Lake Erie. In the Pymatuning Res. where the fish and game commission do quite a bit of work concerning Walleye, the population has almost been taken down to zero due to invasive species. Not to mention Lake Erie itself. We are suppose to kill any invasive caught when we are out fishing on it.

It is funny in a very tragic way that the DNR of WI hatchery raises Musky, Walleye, Perch, Sturgeon, SMall Mouth Bass, Lake Trout and Coaster Brook Trout RIGHT ALONG-SIDE OF COHO, CHINOOK SALMON, RAINBOW & BROWN TROUT......all of which are, for all intents and purposes INVASIVE INVASIVE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Sorry for the Lweis Black outburst.

We've actually just been talking about this subject in my ichthyology class I'm in right now. We were just discussing yesterday how exotics like the sea lamprey have decimated the fishery industry in Lake Erie. While they don't really damage the actual meat of fish caught by commercial fisheries, they leave nice ugly sucker marks that would ward off most buyers of the fish. And don't get me started on how the actual native species themselves are impacted...

Worst part is that non natives like Cichlids, Trahira, Snakeheads, Arowanas, Stingrays, Round Gobies, Tilapia, etc which have all become established somewhere are all good aquarium species. Goes to show tjhat a few idiots can ruin it for everyone else
