Closest youll get is macro algea + red mangroves. With a VERY small bio load with a shrimp or two I think youll be fine with maybe a wc every 2 weeks? Good experiment to try!

There is no such thing as perpetual motion. It is ludicrous to believe that a tank, especially a marine environment would survive like that.
BTW, read the first review, "not as good as you think"...I agree with that review above all others.

Technically it is not because there is energy input in the form of light...but I tend to agree with the not so impressed crowd...no thanks...

I received the small round one as a gift in February 2008. I keep it on my desk at work. It started with 5 shrimp. One died in the first month or so; the rest are still alive today. Maintenance is basically nothing - there is a magnet on the inside and you put another magnet on the outside to "scrub" the algae off if the glass. I do it once every 6 weeks or so.

I think the most important factors are steady heat and steady light. I think this is why it works so well at the office, since there is not much fluctuation and the patterns are very regular.

It's cool and a good conversation piece, but they are expensive little contraptions. If your shrimp die, it's very expensive to have the unit "restocked."

To mr bigglesworth: I mean this in the nicest way. You seem like a tinkerer and I think you would be tempted to tinker with this. Just a fair warning that these things are fragile little ecosystems and if the balance is thrown off, all of the shrimp will probably die. I worry sometimes when I'm cleaning it that I'm raising the temperature too much by handling it...

In all, I think it's a cool thing, and I'm glad I have one.

I was gifted one. Introduced me to fishkeeping. They were active seemed healthy. Sparsely decorated. Mine lived for over a year n died in a heat wave.
