Educating MFK on Africans!

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
Hey just wanted to thank everyone =] I would like to add more - it's just hard finding the time to take what I know plus gather other information from appropriate sources and putting it together.

Mike- I also appreciate the additions that you have also made.

I will do what I can when I can =] Maybe in a few weeks when I work out job situations I'll try and add a little.

What Info on Blue Dolphin (Cyrtocara Moorii) & Brevis (Neolamprologus)

Great Info. !!!

I just set up my 1st African Tank up 55 gal. (no fish yet) & trying to find out what
I can keep together with what. This site has been a great help thanks Ash.

So from what I've read I could put Peacocks, Fronts, Tropheus, Calvus, Comps & Tangs
Together? How about a Julie, Brevis & a Lemon too?

That is a not totally correct. Fronts will get big and one day eat your brevis. The lemon, julies, comps, calvus are fine together. Fronts do best in groups together with little or nothing else. Peacocks, can go with these, but must mix carefully. Tropheus do best alone, but can mix but is really tough to do with more than one tropheus...

That would be a terrible mix. I wouldn't try it myself. Go with Mike, he knows what's up.

After doing more research
What do you think of putting one of each of these in my 55 gal. tank?

*Aulonocara Golden Peacock
*Aulonocara steveni "Mbamba Bay" -
yellow bodied with a vibrant blue head with dark vertical bars
-Aulonocara stuartgranti sp. "Cobue" - royal blue color and blood-red ventral fins.
-Aulonocara masoni - blue body color with orange ventral

*Cynotilapia afra
*Labidochromis caeruleus - Yellow
*Labidochromis Perlmutt
*Altolamprologus Calvus Black
*Cyprichromis leptosoma

?Julidochromis ornatus
?Neolamprologus brevis or stappersii or ocellatus
?Xenotilapia bathyphilus
?Copadichromis azureus sold under the name Haplochromis chrysonotus

*Leporacanthicus galaxias Vampire Pleco
*Synodontis multipunctatus, cuckoo catfish

I wouldnt mix the tang's with the malawis as the personalities are very different. Also some of those shellies wouldnt mix well with malawis.

Xenotilapia generally do better in schools and make for a cool species only tank. I am trying to set up a species only schooling tank for Xenotilapia bathyphilus Mtoto 'Blue'. It will be months before I can afford to do the setup given my current situation, but that is my plan for my empty 55.

Cyprichormis are fast and beautiful fish, I have 2 of them right now and I am hoping to pick up 2 more later down the road but they also do better in schools and not single and I honeslty think that some of the fish on your list will pick on those also. They are top water fish and depending on what you keep them with (esp a larger fish) they may be seen as dinner.

Neolamprologus tend to be small in size and will probably be eaten by a 5-6inch fish. They are shellies that tend to grow in the 2 inch range.

Its really better to either do Malawi or to do Tang. My Auloncara picked at my cyps as well as my fronts and others, so I ended up having to give him up. I would either do a Tang tank or a Malawi tank. While some tangs do mix ok with malawis - the malawis esp any mbuna will typically be quite a bit more agressive and pick at your tangs (or at least in my personal experience).

Cyprichromis leptosoma

General: This fish is found in the southern part of Lake Tanganyika and swim in large schools in the mid and upper water areas. They come in different color morphs and are usually identified by which part of the lake they came from. (For Example: I have 2 cyps and they are Cyprichromis leptosoma- mpulunga becuase that is the area of the lake they came from).

Tank set-up: It is best to have a nice mid-top open space to allow lots of swimming room. In the wild they tend to swim near ledges so it is best to have a rocky setup with lots os swimming room at the top to give them the saftey of the rocks and they open space they need for swimming. When choosing tank mates, pick smaller fish - cyps are not generally agressive so they should be fine with fish in their size range that are not overly agressive. Also I wouldnt reccomend larger fish as they tend to see cyps as a good source of food.

Size: They range from 3.5-4.5-ish inches.

Temperature: 77-80 degrees.

Feeding: They eat smaller foods such as flakes and frozen foods. It is better to feed smaller foods as they have small tube like mouths that will pick up the food. The food is something you want to be in mid-top water range. I personally like frozen foods. I dont reccomend blood worms though. (I really dont reccomend blood worms for a lot of tangs).

Breeding: If you want to breed these guys, it is best to have them as the dominant fish in the tank they are inhabiting. They are mouthbrooders but unlike many other fish it's better to have several males with many females in larges schools as opposed to one male with many females. The males will make territorys in the upper levels of the water and show off colors and look like rocket ships with tails when they are "seducing" the female. The female will hold eggs in her mouth and they will be fertilized in her mouth. They females will generally pop out a few eggs - go to a male and then pop out a few more eggs and move on to a different male.

Most of this info is easily found on the net. I learned and knew a majority of it from keeping them and reading books that contained info on them.
I did get some of my info from this site but the majority of it came from info I have read in various books.
