Regarding the issue of mixing Utaka, Peacocks and Mbuna, I have read that sometimes if you put them all in a large tank (55 gallons or more) when they are very young, and they grow up together, they will be less aggressive towards each other. Any thoughts on this?
When I first got into cichlids I mix all types including tangs, peacocks, haps, mbuna in a 120 4ft. Things went great until sexual maturity came. It was not, let them all grow up together and it will be fine.
I have mixed Mbuna and peacocks before, not the best idea. In my case my peacock was actually more agressive, none the less I wouldn't do it again. I switched to m/f breeding tank and kept just Peacocks... prob one of the better set-up, show tanks I had. Colors are beautiful. I personally don't think fish quite work like that, they might be fine when small but when they grow larger they will turn on the tankmates. Just like now, I keep my rock dwellers in my frontosa tank.... which will change soon as they are growing larger and although Frontosas seem to be pretty docile... you never know when they will turn around and eat your smaller fish.

Gen info: Sciaenochromis Fryeri is found in the rocky areas of lake malawi. There are many types of morphs that have been found. These are popular aquaria fish as they display a nice bright coloration.
Size: ~ 7 inches in length.
Water Temp: I keep a tank temp. of 79-81 degrees for my malawis. This should be a good temp. range for these fish.
Water settings: These fish perfer hard water, I would suggest a minimum pH of 7.8.
Diet: A variety is good. Brine shirmp, pellets, spirulina (or an veggie type foods), krill etc.
Tank Set-up: A good sand substrate works well with a a lot of rockwork should provide a good home for these fish.
Tank Mates: Other haps, or malawi mbuna. If you did an species only tank I would suggest the male/female ratio of 3/f per 1/m. If you dont give them a good f/m raatio they will fight over the females. This is an agressive fish.
Breeding: Sciaenochromis fryeri is said to be an easy fish to breed, given good water conditions and a good exposed rock. Just like most mbuna they are mouth brooders and the male will fertilize the eggs with his anal fin.
