The aro is like 5 years old and should be alot bigger than that, id say its a critical situation it's equivalent to an oscar in a 29gallon. Im concerned because he knows his tank is too small but doesn't do anything about.

No, that's more like keeping an oscar in a 50 gallon. (Still way too small).

Can't remember if I have suggested this in a post before, but is it possible that Drop-eye in arowanas is the result of them head-banging the glass or other lids of their aquaria? When my fish was smaller (8-14") it was living in an 80 gallon tank with a large glass center brace. It was also a very skittish fish and whenever startled, or sometimes for no reason at all, or at night, it would hit the brace HARD! It would often damage its face or knock off a scale or two, etc. Sometime latter the fish developed Drop-eye on one side. Don't know about you but if I banged my head that hard repeatedly, I might be a little wal-eyed too!! :D

Anyway, now the fish is in a large fiberglass tank with a polycarbonate greenhouse panel for a top. Now it just bounces off with no damage!

Does their scales grow back?
Are they good piranha tank mates?

Thanks for this infos
I just got started in raising this wonderfull fish, and all the infos I can get is welcome.
congrats

wow you have really done your home work, have had a golden aro for a few months, been feeding it chunks of beef heart, tried to keep a flowerhorn along with but had to remove it as it was scared ****less
