Educating MFK on the Silver Arowana

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
great post, heres a question, The owner of a LFS told me that as Arowanas get larger/older that there Immune system gets weaker. I think he was just talking out his @ss.

In a asian restaurant that I have seen, a 3FT Silver is kept in a 4FT tank since
day 1 when they got it young.

It gobbles anything that is fed from chicken, beef to live feeders.

In keeping large fishes, I guess the tank/ holding ration of 1:3 minimum has to be
in place. Else no matter what ou feed nor how you care for your fish, it would definately
have some effects and issues later.

If upgrading to a bigger tank is not possible, then a FGT would be great and with plants surrounding it and a nice glass or netted cover, it would serve as a nice backdrop.

Sadly, some owners don't just care that much or due to the market price of the silver arowana versus its more expensive endangered species ( Green/Red/Gold), it may never have such luxury.

That's one of the saddest things I have seen.

UH WELL....i want a new silver:cry:

Wheres the part where they jump out and die all the time because 90% of people who keep them don't understand THEY NEED SPACE?

I am sorry, I love this majestic fish and all, but its another one of those cases where so many die each year due to ignorance and the 'must have' factor.

Sorry to be negative, it's just my opinion. We export 10,000 silvers a year to asia, and I can only imagine where 99,950 of them end up.. on the floor. Can't argue with supply and demand, though!

I wish tanks with bigger footprints were more reasonable and easily obtainable so more people could have the opportunity to give these beautiful fish a long happy life.

Ok I am getting ready to delve into yet another new fascination...:) The South American Silver Arowana. And I have been waiting to read here, as I did not want this fish I am going to purchase or is going to be purchased for me, to be sad and hate it's life... But hey captivity sucks...

I just recently added 3 p-bass to my family of CA and SA's:drool: Which have a home when they are too big. This home is waiting greedily... Long time before that though, At least 12 months...

My Goal is to upgrade to at least a 400 gal. That is around 36" tall. Can I house a 9 inch Silver Aro in a 150 for a couple years, or will it hit the 3 and 4' mark before I get to this upgrade? I would say the question here is growth rate .. Fast and Slow case scenario's please?

I wonder how many people actually have wild silver aro's. Would be nice eliminating that problem with drop eye

Hmm... I have an empty arcylic 180gal. with duel overflows in the garage. I was thinking of growing out some more Pbass in it. Now I'm thinking growing out a silver aro in it might be just as much fun, if not more! :D
