I currently own a 22 in Fimbriated Moray. I am looking into possibly trading for a Green Moray that would be housed with theFimbriated. The Green is supposed to be almost 3 feet. My question is am I going to be able to safetly house these 2 together?

I don't have the option of setting up another tank if it doesn't....house is full allready. Only other thing in the tank is a Volitan and a turbo snail- eating hermit crab.

How big of a tank do you have for an eel that grows to 8'+?

And yes eels are hit or miss on tank mates.. I've had 2 goldentail morays (same size) together for a few years then one day out of no where they started to attack each other. One of the golden tails is now with a much larger Braziallian dragon and the other is in with a larger white mouth and a very small white mouth. So far no issues with either tanks yet.

I heard Green morays are very cannabalistic and will eat conspecifics and basically any eel.

I am not an experienced SW keeper.

How big of a tank? As big as it needs......LOL I have NEVER heard of an 8 footer in captivity......5 maybe.....which I don't see why it couldn't reside in a 4 by 8.

OK in all seriousness.....thanks for the replies. I know eels are hit and miss but I only own 1. My problem is I can't FIND ANY..........

VL do you know where I might be able to obtain some of these eels you speak of??? (Brazilian dragon OR whitemouth)

I have even put up posts in the classifieds looking for fancy morays and NO ONE seems to know where to get them. Obviously if you own some you might be able to help point me in the direction of some????

there was an awesome Hawaiian dragon moray at my LFS for 1200$, no one would spend 1200, and it died after being in captivity for 2 years in a 30G tank.

Youve never seen an 8footer in captivity? Go to seaworld, or any big aquarium. I know ive seen a green eel 7+'.

And tank as big as it needs? do u have one setup yet that could maintain what u want?

Should have specified......besides public aquariums. In a home aquarium. We all know stuff doesn't get near as big in a home aquarium than in a public. Don't see many 60lb RTC in captivity or 4 foot spotted gar but they have them in public aquariums.

Do I have one set up now??? NO. I just got a lil tank. I figured I had some time to let it grow and set up something bigger. Like I am for my other fish.

One of the local shops here has been able to get all kinds of eels in. drop me a pm if you want their info.

he has sold 10 hawiians in the last 6 months, and he has great prices. I have been tempted.

The reason you don't see that many big fish in "private" aquariums is because most of the people kill the creatures they pretend to care for. Myself included in that statement. I have had a few fish that died for no obvious reasons, so I have nothing else to blame but myself for doing something wrong. Then even if there was an obvious reason, if it was bad water parameters or something like that it would be my fault.

I don't wan't to get into it, but basically if a specific species of fish doesn't reach it's average size (Within reasonable variance) then there was most likely something wrong with they way it was cared for.

Eels grow very fast, even on a twice a week diet you could resonably expect to have a 1' green moray become 2'+ in it's first year. So to suggest you will have a tank ready for him at will is not realistic. And a 4x8 (foot print) tank would not be big enough past the 4' mark IMO. These eels love to swim and explore and would be far too cramped in that tank.

Now, the Dragon eels at 3' max would be better. My braziallian has been great, got him locally for $120 which is a deal. I have seen them on liveaquaria.com as well as Marinecenter.com A bit pricey but a reliable source for fish.

You should be able to also ask your local dealer to just order one from his supplier.

My whitemouth eel was 12" when I got him 2 months ago and is now over 2' long. The dragon was about 1.5' a year ago and is now a good 3'. Also have 2 zebra morays that are about 3' and 4' in length (they actually grow slower than the rest). The golden tail moray are very nice eels and stay under 2'.

I have ZIP for LFS around here that can get thier hands on Morays. Am unaware of any in the state. The only one that I have talked to that can get them can only get snowflakes, zebras, and Tessys (which I assume fall into the same category as the greens AKA UN-keepable)

I guess my quest for a Whitemouth continues.........
