Eel for 55gal/ possible tankmates

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
Eels are always looking for food. I've had well feed snowflakes and chainlinks eat fish tankmates.

Don't feed FW fish to SW predators. It will lead to their untimely death.. Plenty of articles floating around about "fatty liver disease".

You could try scorpions, dwarf lions, small anglers... But if mom wants "pretty little" fish you're going to be stuck with a bunch of lame nemos!

I have kept Snowflake Morays on and off now for 30 years, and have NEVER witnessed them eating fish! I usually feed them a good supply of shell fish, which is there natural diet.

yeah, i've seen plenty of cases where smaller morays are kept with some rather F*^%$KING small fish, grammas, damsels, chromids, aldabrensis dotties, etc...

if your mom want's pretty fish show her some pics of snowflake and zebra eels, i think they're pretty.
you can keep them with dwarf angels, larger clowns, (tomato and marroon) fairy wrasses, larger hawkfish (arc eye and freckled) tilefish, butterflyfish sometimes, foxfaces and rabbitfish, dwarf lions, marine bettas, and maybe certain tangs. most tangs tend to be a little abivolent, but if you can find a nice docile individual it would make a nice addition

I thought fatty liver disease was a result of the high fat content of the feed. Like Beef hearts for instance. High fat content.

goldfish are oily-ass fish, it's the same way.
most FW fish are fattier than SW, the lower density of FW measn the fish have to be lighter as well to stay neutrally boyant

Very amusing. You are obviously far more experienced than me lol...Did it perhaps occur to you it might be difficult to find small live SW baitfish and prawns in Toronto ;)?

Anyways, used to give the lil Snowflakes SW-acclimated feeder guppies/baby mollies as they don't pick at the eels like live shrimp.

As has already been said thats your problem. If you cant supply the right food you probably shouldnt have it. Goldfish do nothing for the eel. Im sure if you could be bothered looking frozen food is easily available.

who the F(&% said they needed to be live, you have grocery stores in toronto right?
frozen shrimp? i'm sure you have SOMEthing in there that they'll take to

Exactly. Im sorry SimonL for my first comment if it really offended you but ille say it again. Only Idiots feed there saltwater fish goldfish. What good reason is there for doing it? Just for the "fun" of seeing the eel eat the goldfish? If thats the case dont be a tight ass and buy a damsel or chromis atleast. Otherwise plenty of stores sell frozen fish, shrimp, mussels ect ect which are alot healthier then feeding goldfish. Mollies work ok like you said but probably still arent as good as wild caught frozen.
