nope it was an eel not a lungy if it was a lungy i woulda released it anyway
no matter how much there worth coz a it lll costme 1/4 a million in fines and b there way to endangered. it hard a smoother sharper body

pointy nose,fire orange belly,black top,sure sounded like it.lol

Definitly not a short fin either, I've never seen one with a pointed face or black on the top.

Maybe it was a Lamprey? Mordacia mordax are in your area and they are a dark blue-gray to brown, have a pointed head and if slipped away without a proper inspection look identical to an eel.
 
How far where you from the sea, if you were within 100 kilometers or so it could have been The yellow-bellied sea snake (Pelamis platurus), the description is spot on and it is found in that area. Though not at all agressive they are highly toxic.
