Do FW eels benefit from being able to burrow? Should i put sand in for them? They do fine with their hiding places but somehow i feel theyll thrive with some tahitian moon! Any eel keepers feel free to add experiences.

I used #0 crushed coral as a substrait in my fw eel tanks. #1 would be just as good.

I start with totally pure RO/DI water with a low ph and let the crushed coral stabolize the PH at 7.4. They seemed to do just fine for many years.

I use sand. He dosnt burry himself. Now fw eel are you talking about the "moray" or the tire track ones? I have one of those so called "FW Morays" I went to a gift shop on the beach and got a huge peice of white coral for him. He loves it. I think I even have pictures in my album of it

im if u ask me i would say get sand because its easyer for the eels to burrow. but rocks and other thing like that will do ok. but of wat i here they seem to like the sand.

i would be worried about coral cutting the skin of my eel they do benafit from haveing a place to burrow and sand is the eaziest for them to burrow in some eels will get very stressed if they can't burrow but others mainly the larger ones like fire and tire track eels don't seem to burrow as much but still like to be abile to do so if they like
and there really isn't a freshwater moray eel they need salt if you keep it in fresh water it won't last long they need to be keept in brackish water

I have 3 Spiny's,well,3 from the spiny family, and they burrowed in the LFS but not in my tank.Probably because i have 19 more hiding spots in my tank than the LFS did!

I have half my tank on pea gravel and the other half is CaribSea Aquarium Sand Moonlight White Sand.

The coral hasnt seemed to mess with him at all the whole time Ive had him in there. And yes I know there isnt a real "FW Moray" They sell them called that at some lfs, or a snowflake. Mine has been in a bracksih tank sence I got him.
