So I'm in the process of emptying out my 250 to make room for a kitumba frontosa colony. Part of the process is going to be dosing copper while the tank is empty to kill off a Malaysian snail infestation that numbers in the several hundreds. My question is, will high levels of copper affect my bio filter?

Why take the risk when 5-6 clown loaches will clear the tank in a week or so, bonus you probably wouldn't have to feed them. Also if you bought them small you could probably sell them for more due the size they gain when feasting on snail infestations.

The tank has a built in sump/filter that is also infested with snails. Also I want this to be a permanent solution. I thought that puffers would eat all of their snails 2 years ago, now they are in 2 of my 5 tanks and have never left.

copper is going to kill everything is high enough doses.

+1 , never had puffers, I have had a tank that I could wipe 2-300 snails off the glass every week and never made a dent. 5 CL and 3 weeks of vacuuming empty snail shells out and then a thorough cleaning of my filter and haven't had a problem since. Put the clowns in at 3" and very quickly had some fat 4-5" clowns.

Only other way is to completely strip the tank let it dry for a bit and start over.

May want to watch overfeeding, I had to learn this myself so I'm not attacking you or anything, snail populations grow to the amount of food they have and they only get what's left from the fish. If you have a real bad case then you are most likely severely overfeeding. Again I'm not attacking just sharing my experiences

That's great advice. My explosion is due to tank algae. San Diego tap water is terrible containing high amounts of silicate among other things. Even the ro water down here has enough nutrients left over to grow diatoms. The algae is a constant food supply for the snails.

Salt will kill almost all fresh water inverts in high enough concentration.
