Effect of copper on BB

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
What kind of concentrations are we talking about? Like ich treatment concentrations, or higher?
I would say higher, if theres no livestock in the tank and you just want the snails to die then just go bananas with it. Either way you slice this your bacteria colonies are going to die off, no getting around it unless you go natural predator clean up instead.

So I'm in the process of emptying out my 250 to make room for a kitumba frontosa colony. Part of the process is going to be dosing copper while the tank is empty to kill off a Malaysian snail infestation that numbers in the several hundreds. My question is, will high levels of copper affect my bio filter?

Never had that problem, but according to these sources copper is a very bad choice, and salt might not work. I would certainly try salt before copper however.

Can you disconnect the filter and run it temporarily using tank water out of a tub or bucket? Then you could bleach the tank. Bleach is easily removed with flushing and dechlorinators, whereas it's unclear to me how you would be certain to remove all the copper.
