Effective Canister Filter for Piranha Tank

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
i've looked at prices for FX5 and my LFS has them for 300 dollars. with a 30% coupon thats still at about 220-230 with tax. Eheim classics are much cheaper along with rena xp3's. idk which one of the three to go with lol

I now have 5 FX5 units on three different tanks and swear by them and Hagen's customer service.
Easy to set up, quiet and just run.
Good luck

Howdy,

I run Eheims, and I have been for almost 30 years. Never a single problem other than the one filter that had reduced flow rate after two decades of 24/7 service - I finally replaced it. It's performance you can rely on. Search the Set-up forum for FX-5 maladies, and you'll find a laundry list of issues. Search Eheim, and you'll mostly find user errors of people new to canisters. Stick to the classic line and you'll save money in the long run because you know you'll get 20 years of use out of it.

I wouldn't know about Eheim customer service because I never had to contact them.

Just my $0.02

I'm looking at them a bit closer and im leaning towards the Eheim 2217 Classic. only thing i might have an issue with is the lack of removable media baskets. I like to add peat moss to my tank to create an amazon biotype. The FX5's are awesome in that regard, but they are also quite expensive.

There's a ton of people on other threads talking about the ebay knock offs of the FX5's. Some are saying they are great. Maybe worth looking into. I am running an Eheim 2217 and having no problems though. Water tests always come out good.
