Soooo just giving an update on putting in the egg crate, ofcourse me being lazy the first method I tried was to take out all the decor but leave the sand and try to push and wiggle the crate down into the sand untill I got in onto the glass bottom. well that didnt work AT ALL. I couldnt even get the thing half way into the sand no matter how much I wiggled it and moved it back and forth it wouldnt budge. Soooo I ended up taking all the sand out and doing it the right way. layed the egg crate out and put the sand back in. But for anyone who doesnt use egg I HIGHLY suggest it. it just feels soo much safer when arranging rock, and you dont get that disturbing screaching when sand gets crushed between the glass and rock. Im going to crate every tank from now on if I even think about putting rock in it.

homedepot, you will find it in the electric section by the light fixtures, it was named "egg crate" at my homedepot but its also called light diffuser. its easy to cut also a pair of dykes is all you really need, took 5 min to cut.. definitely worth the process. going to need more sand now though. I had about 3/4's to an inch of sand now that the crates in theres only a thin coverage over the white crate, so my africans cant dig to deep , I enjoy watching them dig so Im going to add some more later on, just fyi.
I have several larger pieces of lava rock in a 75 gallon. I did put the egg crate in prior, and then used smaller gravel to fill it. Depending how much sand you have in, you could also remove portions of the sand and then just shift the egg crate down to the bottom. DEFINETLY a good idea to have the egg crate in to support the rocks. Prevents "hot spots"!
Though I don`t use it, if the eggcrate makes you feel better..fine.
One thing not mentioned was painting.
If you have diggers, sooner or later, they will expose the white, eggcrate.
A couple coats of Krylon Fusion that closely matches your substrat helps.

true, luckly for me the crates are white and I have white sand ; D
