I have a 72 galllon tank holding like 20 cichlids. I am concerned about the holy rocks i have in the tank sitting right on the glass. Was wondering If I should of put egg crate on the bottom? Can I still do it? It would require emptying the tank of all fish and driftwood and holy rocks. then set it back up again. What do u suggest? I just head it was safer with the egg crate on bottom. And I'd like to add more rocks then I already have.

I would say its not needed. Just make sure the rock is sitting on the glass and not on the gravel. If you have the extra time and already have the crates, it wouldn't hurt.

actually this is a GREAT idea! especially with cichlids always rearranging the gravel/sand making the rocks move so constantly- a great protection for the bottom of the tank if it ever get exposed by those cichlids if the rocks ever fall-

If you're planning on adding more rocks, put the egg-crate in. It'll help support them more efficiently.

Howdy,

I have egg crate under my large rocks. And yes, it requires an empty tank to start....

I've dropped plenty of rocks in tanks and have never broken one...

Generally, the water makes the rock fall slow enough that even huge rocks won't break it...

Slate or flat cut rock is a bit riskier, as it can slice through the water just right and shoot down very hard. But I've had this happen a number of times and expected the impact to cause damage... but it never has...

I've used egg crate on a few tanks in the past, but after the few experiences of impacts not causing any damage, I no longer do...

The only "problem" using it will cause is that it is unsightly if/when the digging cichlids expose the egg crate. That alone was enough to make me not use it as a extra precaution...

that is the exact reason for posting this thread. My cichlids dig all the time. Making big piles of sand and expose the glass bottom. So I was thinking about using the egg crate and then maybe adding another bag or two or eco-complete. How much sand can I add? I already have 75 lbs of sand.

I think it's a great idea. I used a "kind" of eggcrate under my gravel in my plywood tank as my bass likes to dig holes in the grave and I didn't want him damaging the paint and fiberglass over time.

Oooops, I just re-read my post. I meant digging in his "gravel" not digging his own "grave"
