I dont agree that it removes the concern of rocks falling which could possible crush fish... rocks structures are just as sturdy when stacked on the glass as they are when stacked on the egg crate...
I do believe if your going to stack rock the bae rock should be placed on the glass (or egg crate)... and putting it on sand (or gravel) can allow for an unstable base...
But the solution is putting the base on something solid, be it glass or egg crate...
The single benefit I see in using egg crate on the bottom is to buffer a falling rock from cracking/shattering the bottom pane of glass. Which in my experience is not much of a risk, yet is theoretically possible...
The single downside to using egg crate that I know of is it doesn't look good when it get's exposed by digging fish...
Using a deeper sand bed does reduce the potential of the egg crate being exposed... and a deeper sand bed also will act as a buffer for falling rocks...
We read about the threat of toxic gases building up in deep sand beds... yet I've used sand in many tanks over quite a few years and I rarely get bubbles built up in the sand... and when I do they don't ever cause any harm... I'm rather convinced this "threat" is a grossly exaggerated myth...
Sure it's possible, but theoretically so is spontanious combustion...
