Hello, I have an older style 110H tank so the glass is pretty thick. It's filled already, gravel in, and cycled with fish, one thing I overlooked was putting eggcrate on the bottom to protect the glass from the rocks that I will be stacking (pretty high as well) being it's going to be an african tank. My question is do I really need to back it up with eggcrate? I've had a tank bottom break in the past from stacking rocks which fell. If I do need to put it in, is there a way I can do it with the substate in already?

Ive done this before when i kept african cichlids before because the digging would make the rocks fall and it was a danger for the glass. I had sand so i just cut the egg crate to fit and placed it on the sand and shimmied it back and forth until it was buried in the sand then stack the rocks on top. It work well. No more falling rocks. Which why i dont keep fish that dig holes in my sw tanks either. :)

Ok cool, yeah I'd rather be safe than sorry again. I use crushed coral so it will be a bit more time consuming but no biggie. I will probably cut two or three pieces to fit, move the gravel to one side, cover, etc. I'll let you know how it works :)

I have the same tank with Africans as well and they are constantly digging underneath the rocks enough to expose the eggcrate, I don't think I would trust it to be bare bottom with the way this happens.

Awesome, do you have any pics, I haven't seen too many 110 highs. Also, I've been thinking, I may just take out all of the gravel to do this for I don't want even a tiny piece of substrate coming in contact between the eggcrate and the glass.

In my 220 I put bricks directly on the glass on the bottom. Then filled with sand around the bricks. Then I stacked my rocks on top. So there is no way my Africans can dig under the bricks to topple all my rocks. With how I set the rocks up you can barely tell the bricks are there
