Eggcrate below artificial rock

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
haha thanks trouble247, yeah the package said "100 cable ties"
oh they're good with eggcrates too!! great!

it's plastic but do you think it's safe?

are you sure? it is "artificial" but it's still "fairly" heavy and I'm worrying about how it probably falls slow motion & hard on the tank bottom..
i think the glass is think too since it's a 40gallon tank.

he's 6"..is that big?!

haha the tupperware thing might work..it's just that i wanted to be able to tie the rock and "object" together..the eggcrate has holes right so..
and I kinda didn't want to use up too much space..since then one corner of the tank is "full" and fish won't be able to go around there..
i was thinking if I cut holes in the eggcrate, it can be like another "hide-out"..just chill under the eggcrate.haha

If you used the tupperware container you could drill a couple holes in the top and still ziptie the rock to the top of the container. If you went this route you could also cut out a hole in the side of the container and use it as a hide out also and it would still be very sturdy...

Good idea Doubledragon... JEAE21, cable ties are usually nylon, but perhaps some are plastic... I'm sure they'd be fine, I've used small ones to hold plants onto driftwood 'till they took root, and some people have used eggcrate and cable-ties to make 'in-tank refugiums' in salt-water tanks, but if you are worried then maybe we could figure out something else... Perhaps others can mention if they've successfully used cable ties in their tanks for extended periods...

If you're still worried about glass breakage [which I think is every fishkeepers nightmare] then put some eggcrate on the bottom, couldn't hurt... Also, if you secure the fake rock well, then no worries...

6 inches? Sounds big enough to me, shouldn't be a problem...

thanks guys. is both nylon and plastic cable tie safe to use underwater? it won't release any harmful chemicals would it?

if my turtle does break the tank, would the manufacture replace it? (all glass aquariums)

Well, I use a buttload of cable-ties in my job, and they never hurt me :) ...actually that's a lie, the sharp ends have pricked my fingers a few times... Seriously though, Nylon is just a strong plastic, and is used in tons of kitchen utensils and even some doggie treats... So I would think no problems mate...

As for safe to using cable-ties underwater... It's been done as I mentioned. But that's no proof that it's perfectly safe. I know that some coloured cable ties are for high radiation areas, and some are UV resistant... I don't know if they are made with special chemicals which could leach into the water... We use red ties made of 'halar' in air conditioning plenums... but I don't even know what halar is... Will have to google it later...

Perhaps dental floss [not the minty kind...], that's strong and made to go in a damp environment... So should be fish safe...

As for replacing tanks... That's easy... I don't know...

yeah mine are colored...red/green/yellow/etc.

haha my dental floss has mint flavor in it..
