I used a Dremel for mine.

When I made my egg crate divider I used pliers and scissors. I didnt want my cichlids to scratch themselves so when I was done I sanded the pointy edges down with sandpaper.

YEa Iused it for my 180 african reef tank and my salt water tank. Just protects the glass so much better. Rock falls it wont blow up your tank also those teny tiny little pointy edges and imperfections rocks have that can create cracks or breaks in glass are safely dispursed through a larger area with the egg crate... Stuff is amazing, super cheap too. If you going to put ANY rocks in your tank I recomend using it.

Just curious but does the egg crate get really dirty under the gravel/sand. I've seen the gunk buildup on egg crate used as a divider and if I don't clean it it adds to my nitrate.

As a divider its open to the water right. If you have a sand bottom it doesnt get dirty. Gravel it might but a good gravel vac will get anything out of there. Its pretty coverd up.
