Congrats! I'm a novice to breeding Cichlids and my first Convict eggs hatched today! Have not seen anything yet because mom and dad took the little wrigglers into a cave right off.
The female convict is only ONE inch long. Any Dovii would be MUCH bigger by the time is was old enough to breed so it would eat that girl as a snack and ask for more!
has been done as i said, i know what you mean tho... i would have to buy one if there were any near me for sale in the uk, just to experience it... also wondering how large they would get? max size?
sorry op, back on topic!-)
good luck with the fry, were the first and only cichlids i bred about 6 years ago, up until 6 months ago!
The pics are horrible except the Venezuelan Red Cory who begged to get it's picture taken. There are a school of five of them in with the Convict pair.
Second pic is a few of the eggs that were higher up and I was able to get a blurry pic of them. Circled them because they are hard to see. There are actually lot's more out of view. It's been 24 hours + and they are still translucent amber in color. None that I can see are white or opaque so far.
Third pic, tiny 1" (2.5 cm) female popping up out of the hole she dug for the eggs. She almost never leaves them and fans them constantly.
Number four, male charging the camera to chase me away!
@72 hours+ and the eggs are still translucent amber. I can see black eye ●● dots now. Water temp' is only 76°F so it may take four days instead of three to hatch but so far not a single white egg.
Wigglers!!! So the eggs are in the process of hatching as I type and the parents take each baby and move it to the second pit dug just to hide them even further from my view!!! Maybe it's best that I can't see them for a few days. I will spend more time sleeping and less time glued to the aquarium. They are SO much larger than newborn angelfish wigglers!!!
Does anyone know how many days they stay wigglers before they try to swim?
And at what point can the eat? Do they eat as soon as they swim or the day after they go free swimming?
That's awesome. They stay in fry stage 7-9 days once they free swim. feed hikari first bites or finely crushed flakes once they start free swimming. Some people feed newly hatched brine shrimp too.
