Is it possible/worth it to use a water proofing paint instead of epoxies or fiberglass etc. to seal a plywood tank?

I see everyone sealing the tanks with epoxies and fiberglass and resins etc, but I always wonder why can't you use a water proofed paint that is safe for fish?

I have used Sherwin Williams epoxy enamel on better than 8 plywood tanks and never had a problem with leaks or scratches causing leaks.
If fact it is a tough sand if you decide to repaint.

Most "waterproof" paint is not meant to be submerged. Most labels say you can't have standing water on it.

Since paint soaks into the wood some it would take a heavy scatch to start damage, but then again I had a pleco suck thru paint fiberglass and one other coating .

It depends on what you mean by "water-proofing paints". Take a look at Ames Research and Sanitred. Both have rubberized paints that are suitable for plywood tanks and ponds.
