Eheim 2028 advice please: adding more biomedia, less mechanical?

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
I'm not personally familiar with your fish stocking so I can't say whether you are overstocked. If it looks like they are crowded in there, you may want to consider 'thinning the herd'.

Keeping an eye on your water parameters will tell you if you're overstocked, water quality wise. Keep up on your water changes.

Is this a bare bottom tank?

The way I see it, it does more good to use plenty of mechanical media & change it as often as possible. This removes a lot of the waste before it has time to decay into ammo, nitrite & nitrate, making your current biomedia more efficient. Adding more bio never really hurts, but you make it sound like you have enough already...

I also have two Eheim 2028's. They are great biological filters, but mechanical filtration is not their strong suit. For my new tank I'm getting mechanical pre-filters to make the biological filtration more efficient.

Add a couple of sponge filters to he tank. Fluval 4 plus will also give you 250 gph flow. Do you have a diatom filter? Polishing the water with a diatom filter a couple of time a week will help.

Take a look at a spin down filter: www.rusco.com .

Cool, but can't really tell any details... I have a pretty good idea of how it works, but they might consider firing their website designer...or maybe giving them a raise...either way.
