Eheim 2080 sucks

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
I have the hoses as short as possible. I don't have any in line equipment. When I first had it I could only run it half speed, because the outflow was so high. I thought that was the problem. I noticed the holes in the spray bar were tiny so I drilled them larger and can run it full blast now. I have all three trays filled with biomedia. I cleaned it about 3 months ago, because it had been running for 6 months. I just mainly wanted to check and see how everything looked inside. There was no noticeable slowing in the flow. The filter seemed surprisingly clean for one that had been running that long. I guess the size of the filter compared to the size of the tank that might not be that surprising. I've been thinking of replacing it with a classic, because I've had good luck with the 2213.

It's very possible that the outflow is just causing the 'floaters' to completely bypass the intake strainers. You might try adjusting the spray bar so the holes face the glass and cause the current to reach the intakes better. A corner tank needs a bit more playing with to optimize the filtration flow pattern.

Any pictures of your tank?

I don't have any pictures. I'll have to try and get one. I had wondered about the flow causing the bypass of the intakes. Thats why I had drilled the holes in the spray bar larger, because the output before was rediculously fast. I'll try and face it towards the glass. I'm actually putting this filter on a larger aquarium next month. I was just getting frustrated and wondering if it was going to be worth putting it on a larger aquarium if it can't keep this one clean or if I should just replace it.

Before I fed them today ther was still stuff floating around in the tank, so hopefully adjusting the spray bar fixes it. Thanks.

The Eheim Classic Series raised the bar very high when it comes to performance. Actually the highest in the hobby. But it is very important like Deeda said to make sure it was installed properly.I have never known Eheim to make a bad filter.

I already confirmed it was installed correctly. I think I remember HarleyK saying one time he didn't like the 2080, because it was a poor design.

I've been running a Pro3 2080 on a 150 gallon with large cichlids for over a year with no problems at all. Your 54 gallon should be sparkling with that kind of horsepower...assuming you're not over feeding.

Your problem may be associated with Media inside the canister. Check your flow rate, is it high and strong or weak?

- If it's weak, you may have a clog somewhere or too much compressed media
- If it's strong, are you using the correct media in the correct order?

I had wondered about the media. The flow is high. I know it calls for ehfimech in the bottom tray. I just have matrix in all 3 trays. I saw people said they used biomedia in all trays with no complaints, so that's why I went that way. I'd think if the stuff was going through the biomedia it'd be stopped by the fine filter pad. I actually cut a 50 micron pad and put on top of the fine filter pad to try and get it cleaner. Do you think I should put ehfimech in the first tray? I've been considering buying the eheim 2080 media pack to fill it with instead, but don't want to spend the money if it doesn't help. Thanks.

Howdy,

Sorry you fell for it. I agree that the 2080 sucks, and I have been posting that on this site for years. I am an old-school Eheim guy and love their products - as long as they are Classic. The Pro 3 has massive flaws, and I finally took mine out of service a couple of years ago.

I read some reviews before I bought. I guess they were the wrong ones.

Try this --> HERE <--, it might help you on your 54gal. Biofiltration is fine, the 2080 has plenty. The problem is mech. This trick worked okay on my 75 gal. Not great, but okay...

Thanks. I had found that thread the other day and might try that on mine. I'm actually moving the filter to a 92 gallon, so I don't know how it'll work out. I know you're a huge Eheim fan and appreciate you can admit when they make a bad product. I'd like to just get rid of the 2080 and use a 2217 instead, but the price I gave for and have been using it for less than a year I hate to waste so much money.
