Yes, I would suggest a media bag for the bio media as it makes it easier to clean. But, you could always stack the media as follows - bottom lattice screen, Ehfi Mech, blue pad or two, Ehfi Substrat Pro (cocoa puff balls), white pad, top lattice screen. Of course, this is assuming you are using the Eheim media. Did your filter come pre-filled with media when you bought it?

I am certian this is the lattice but one other thing I have found is that there is a rubber type plug at the end of tha channel from the impellor at the side of the housing, they go hard over time and tend to seep water and eventually fall out, many shops do not stock them but you can shave down a champagne or wine cork and jam it in as long as a tight fit and that holds.

The flow drops to next to nothing if you lose the "plug" altogether.

Just Toby, I think you are referring to the Eheim 2227/2229 filter regarding the plug located in the filter head. Yes, I have replaced my worn plug on my 2229 with a cut-to-fit rubber plug because I needed one NOW. Works great so I never bought a real replacement one.
