Ok, i bought this filter and finally got it yesterday. I heard all the stories about how the instructions were garbage and it was ahrd to use. Well, i will agree with that. First, it doesnt tell you that you have to cut small sections from the hoses to make the quick disc fit, which is fine, i understood how it worked. Then it tells me to suck on the pressure hose to start suction and to prime the filter, tried this and failed many times. Then i read on about cleaing the filter, and it says to suck on the feed hose and let air out the pressure hose WTF to diff ways?? But turns out that way worked (suck on return hose) and it started the syphon right up.

My next rant is from Petsmart, when i got it, they did a piss poor job boxing it, 2 of the silver clamps that hold the lid on were off, i fixed one, the other was broken, it works once the lid is on, but as soon as tension is lifted, it falls off the filter. Also, one of the locks was INSIDE the pump head, i had to pry it open with a screwdriver, i could hear is bouncing around in there, no clue as to how that happened. Then when i go to seal it up, 2 of the locking clamps dont even hold tight, they just kind of rest there, but whatever, it sealed up fine.

Ok, now the rave. The filter is quiet as ****!!!!! Cant even hear it. It has good flow and seems to have helped clear the tank overnight!! There is still some work to be done, but i love it. Im going to give it a week or so to build up bact, then remove my old HOB filter.

If anyone has any suggestions or comments, please leave them. I know im suppose to remove the carbon pad after 2 weeks, anything else?

All and all, once you get this filter working, its awesome!!

Eheim 2217 is one of my favorite filters. They are extremely reliable, and last for years. I've never even bothered to read the directions. I've never had any problems starting a siphon with it though. What size tank do you have it on? I would advise you to keep the hob if it's a 75+. These filters are great for bio and chemical filtration, but mechanical wise, there's just not enough flow to pick up all the bigger garbage in your tank.

I have a 55g.

I got the 2217 on my 50 gallon and I'm planning to add another filter to help out with the mech. I'm glad you was able to set it up, that is the hardest part. My advice is don't use the carbon pads, your suppose to remove it after two weeks otherwise like other carbon they start to leach back into your water. Use filter wool to subsitute for the white filter pad as these pads put a huge dent in your wallet to replace. And yes these filters are as quite as hell, I have to check on it every so often to make sutre it's running.

Ya, it seems after i feed the fish, the water gets cloudy again, im going to do a good cleaning this weekend.

Good filters. I ran 4 of them on my 90 gallon tank a few years ago.

The 2217 is a great filter. I never had a problem with priming mine though... its actually very easy.

- Disconnect both the double-taps and take the top off.
- Put the return line end from the filter into a bucket and open the valve.
- Take the intake line connected to the tank, open the valve and suck on it until water starts flowing over the top and down the tube. Shut the valve and connect the double tap to the filter.
- Open both intake valves and let the canister fill up.
- Put the top of the filter back on and the water filling the filter will purge most of the air out.
- Water will start sputtering out into the bucket for a bit until all the air is purged and then it will run smoothly.
- Give the canister a few shakes to try to dislodge any more air stuck inside and then close the valve.
- Connect the double tap and turn on the filter.. voila!

All and all, once you get this filter working, its awesome!!

One week before removing your HOB is too soon!!! Give it, at a minimum, at least three weeks so as to allow the media in your 2217 to become adequately populated with beneficial bacteria. Otherwise, you may experience a cycle and your stock will be susceptible to ammonia/nitrite-induced stress.

Patience (in the removal of your HOB) is a virtue!!!

Happy as can be for you that you like your new Eheim. The quality of their filters is simply awesome!!!

I just recently bought a 2217 and it Rocks!!! clear water
