Set up my new eheim 2217 about a week ago, and dam this thing is so much louder then my fluval 405. I keep reading that they r silent but not the case for me. I followed eheims mickey mouse instruction booklet for setup. Any pointers on quieting this thing down? I have been trying to figure it out to no avail. One thing is when i plug it in i can see the top suck down about an eighth on an inch is this normal? Not impressed with my first eheim product. This thing is louder than my fx5s.

Try tilting it back and fourth a few times maybe there is air trapped at the top, help it find itsway out. Also a possibility you may have over packed the media?
Usually its one of these two things or a combination of both. Unplugging and plugging it in also helps remove airbubbles.

As others have mentioned, check that the media isn't over packed, and that there isn't air bubbles stuck. Also, make sure that it's seated properly and that the trays are all locked together properly.
I have an Eheim 2078 and it sits out beside my tank since it's so silent; the Top Fin 8000 makes more noise than my filter.

Thanks for the replies. I have tried tilting it around that didn't help already. I also broke it down and reprimed it. I had it flowing in a bucket with the pump off with no problem. As far as media i used what came with it minus the carbon pad. Think i might just order 2 fluval 306. Since i love my 405, 305, and fx5's. just wanted to try an eheim on this one. I Think i will sell it.
Haha I am, but on the fx5 bubble threads everyone always talks about the Germany lady whispering eheim so I got my revenge ^_^

I was having problems with my 2215 a while back being really loud, even though it had been set up for a number of years prior. It turned out that the ceramic shaft wasn't seated correctly and was shaking, so it might be a worth a look to make sure that everything is seated correctly before selling it.
