2217 hands down. Last I checked, after you purchase the filter media for the XP3, the 2217 is actually cheaper. It's a model that has been around for YEARS, and has had phenomenal revues for a long time.

It's quieter than an xp3, is probably going to last longer than an xp3, doesn't clog as fast as an xp3 (all xp3s I've seen slow down after a little while, my 2217 can go 6 months without being cleaned and there's barely any noticeable difference in water flow), and water doesn't bypass the media in a 2217 the way it does in an xp3. You can also vary up what's in the 2217 as much as you want- take out a scoop of one media to make room for another, and don't worry about how much you can fit in each tray and the wasted space between them.

I've never owned a Rena, but everything I've read seems to suggest that Eheims have superior build, function, and longevity.

I've gotta vote for the 2217 also. Mine was made in West German to give you an idea of it's age and all I've had to do to it in all it's years of service is replace the gasket and the impeller. I've never used the XP3 but I've gotta give it to Eheim and the 2217 just on the number of years alone that this has lasted for me.

i have both . i voted 2217 because its way quieter . but the xp3 has better flow

Yeah, true, IF you can get it to stay primed properly. Mine seems to trap air randomly without warning. Even had one pretty much stop flowing completely because of trapped air after it had been running fine for a couple weeks.

I have 6 XP3s that have been running over the last 4-5 years and never experienced any type problems as you describe. I could see this happening maybe if you keep an air stone near the intake though.
