Eheim 2229

I just set up a 90g for my baby 4" green severum, and I'm trying out an eheim 2229 as the filtration for it. Problem is, I've never used eheims before, I've always used fluvals, so I don't know the first thing about them. I work at a LFS and one of my customers gave it to me because he wasn't using it, it looks like it has all the parts but of course there is no box or instructions or anything. Anyways, I think I put it all together properly, but I can't get the damned thing to work, it just makes a rattling noise, sounds like it might be coming from the impeller, but the impeller looks fine to me.

Anyone have any ideas as to whats wrong?

A "rattling" noise is "usually" symptomatic of an impeller-related problem for most cannister filters.

Dumb question but is it primed? is water actually in the canister. Some Canisters require you to manually pump water in
