I am very pleased with the Eheim 2260/62 filters. They are very simple to install, despite the instructions, very sturdy, easy to clean, prime & drain (in my opinion) and offer unlimited options for media choices. The Double taps are expensive if purchased separately. Media must also be purchased separately. I have been using them since 2004.
The FX5 was purchased in late 2010 online by my boyfriend as he was curious what all the hype was about. The instructions were very easy to follow & so was assembly. I don't care for the ribbed hose or the bottom mounted pump. Priming & draining are easy. I've only cleaned it once & the included sponges were difficult to dislodge small plant material from even with a hose sprayer. Media must be purchased separately. I'm a bit uncomfortable with the possibility of circuit board failure eventually though I know this may be irrational.
I'm the one who performs all maintenance on the tanks & filters. Ease of cleaning, availability of parts, build quality and filter life expectancy are important to me. I chose Eheim because of recommendations I read online at various forums. For me, durability & efficiency are important when spending money on filters. Eheim has met those requirements & only time will tell if the FX5 also meets them.
