Eheim 3e 2078 Problems

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
I'm probably going to sit on the fence for a bit as far as filtration. I've put a lot of money into the hobby over the years and I _thought_ this filter would carry me through longer than it has - I just bought it October 2011!

I bought a bigger filter for my tank size because of the sheer size of my goldfish; my oldest fish is 8½ yrs old so they are pretty hefty fish at this point, but man they are messy fish lol

Yep, flows fine with no signs of an issue unless I open the cabinet door & see the annoying amber light - which is why it's pissing me off lol

If it is the bottom light that is flashing(9b2) it suggests that the filter detected a slowdown of more than 50% in the flow rate...maybe try to recheck if the intake has junk on it or hose is partially blocked?

Definitely strange behaviour since I have physically watched it misbehave and the water coming out of the spray bar remains unchanged. I'll have to check it all again tonight.
The hoses are completely clean as that was what I dealt with yesterday when I cleaned everything, so I'll double check the connections as maybe there is a slight air leak somewhere too.

After trying everything including running it without the floater in the output, there is no change.

In fact, if I try to program the filter to do anything, it just jumps back into the same flashing amber light issue which is supposed to mean that it's waiting to be programmed rather than the steady amber light which would mean that it's in manual mode; I think the electronics are screwed up.

I sent an email to Eheim since that appears to be the only way to get in touch with them; 98% of the links on their website jump to 404 errors, so that's pretty useless. The filter is supposed to have a 3 year manufacturer warranty, and I've only had it 13 months (ordered from JLAquatics) so we'll see what Eheim has to say.

Update:

I called Eheim (after getting insider information that included a phone number) yesterday morning & was informed that they were all in a meeting, so the girl that answered took my info & promised that someone would call me back in the early afternoon (they didn't). I received a call later this afternoon from them finally, and after a quick chat with the tech and some button pushing (the filter got worse - output never changed, but the electronic portion of it is non-responsive). Tech has determined that the board has failed, and after forwarding him my email receipt from the purchase in October 2011 (ordered online as they are not available locally) they will be shipping a new filter out to me as soon as they can.

Unfortunately it'll be at my cost to ship the faulty one back to them, but I forgot to ask if I have to tear down everything (hoses & all) and ship that, or if I keep both sets of hoses etc & just ship the empty unit with trays but nothing more.

Oh well.

I hope I don't have to repeat this process again in another year from now :irked:

I think you should wait until you see what they send you...at least they designed in such a way that if the circuit board failed, the pump still working.

I would send back the old parts but keep using the existing filter material.

I'm only going to switch out the unit, but keep all my trays, hoses etc, and swap the suction cups lol

They will get the old filter, new trays, new hoses (spray bar etc), and the old suction cups.
