Eheim canisters you'd recommend for two tanks I'm setting up

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
The 240 will be a 'show tank' in our den/family room/great room (whatever it's called now) and will be in the same room as our big TV and surround sound so quiet is good. That's part of the reason I'm not considering a sump (and the fact I know nothing about them). The Troph 125 gallon will be in the master bedroom so quiet would be good too.

If you want classic eheims you will have to go with 2262s. The 2217 does not have enough power on pushing & pulling water to reach the ends of Lg tanks. I have both models, on diff tank sizes.
Although the 2217 holds plenty of biological & works great for that, the power is disappointing. I have one alone on a 40B & it does not even push bottom fish waste the 36 inches from one end to the other (from output to the intake), and this only has juvie fish under 3 inches. The intake doesn't pull poo inside, even sitting right near, unless it's stirred off bottom.
I have full length stock hoses on it. perhaps cutting them shorter would help (?) I'm going to make a thread for that question...just don't want to cut it if that won't help, as don't want to buy hose in future if the full length is needed.

Now that I think about it, the 2215 I have wasn't overpowering the 29 gallon I moved it to in an emergency once. 2262 it is them I reckon. I do hear good things about Fluval but generally hear better things about Eheim. The Pro 3 filters aren't as rock solid from what I understand.

You can't beat the 2262 if quiet is important. I don't even hear mine running at all, only the actual water sounds.
plus the quick disconnect valves make opening the can a total breeze. I open mine very frequently, only to change polishing media which sits on the top, and I'm not one to chase after chores anymore
;-)
just make sure you sit it on a board that is at least as high as the bottom ledge of your cabinet, so you don't have to LIFT it over that to pull out for servicing. It is heavy with full media, even after water is drained.
My husband put 4 little wheels on a plywood board so I can roll the can inside the cabinet wherever I want and pull it over right to the door. If not for that, removal for opening & returning inside the cabinet would be hard for me.

2262 is the way to go. I had 2-2217's on a 125 Gallon tank, and I ended up buying a 2262 for it. The 2217's were just not enough filtration. I had about 15-20 fish all under 4 inches long. Not terribly overstocked. I have fewer fish now, but they're all 4-8 inches long, plus a very messy sailfin pleco. The 2217's would NEVER have been able to keep up. I'd have had to add a powerhead, an HOB, something to help out. I figured by the time I do that, I might as well just go ahead and get a 2262, so that's what I did. I should have just got a 2262 in the first place.
