Greetings all, I recently procured a 2250 (1st cansiter), and was curious how to set it up. It came with a large net so I'm assuming the EHFI SUBSTRAT PRO goes in there. But how about other media as far as the EHFI MECH, does this just sit in the canister loose? Also I looked on the Eheim website and here http://www.eheim.com/classic.htm and it claims they are equipped with sponge filters, mine didn't come with one. It also claims a back wash, how do you go about doing this? Thanks in advance....

Howdy,

First of all, congrats to a great filter. You will not be disappointed, and it will bring you years of reliable service.

You should fill a classic from bottom up: EhFiMech --> EhFiSubstrat --> Filter Floss

You neither need sponges nor the bag. Just make sure that the two lattice screens are on the bottom (feet down) and the top (feet up) of the canister. Also, make sure no filter floss hangs out because you want to prevent it from entering the impeller.

All the best and happy filtration,

The Canister Man

Yes, if you don't bag the media, maintenance is a little tricky.

I've never used bags in my 2217 though, just use a sponge in between the ceramic rings and the bio ball things. I just use plastic tubs to dump the loose media into when I clean it.

Bags would be a lot easier though....

Back flushing is the easiest way to clean these filters. What they mean is to just hook up an extra double tap to a vinyl tube that attaches to a sink, and run another out the door. The sinks one goes in through the top, and the tube going to the door is the drain. Flush water through the filter backwards, and it will clear it up pretty well. I don't use bags, nor backflush. The ehfi mech and ehfisubstrat pro don't really need to be washed.

lol thats how i do it, and as Wyldfya says, doesn't need doing often.

Right now the media I run from bottom to top is ehfimech, sponge, ehfisubstrat, sponge, polishing floss.

I may bag up the ehfisubstrat just so I can get to the sponge above the ceramic rings....but then again....we're talking about saving 3 mins on something I clean once every few months...lol...

Just wanted to comment on my 2250, this is an in retropect scenario. I wish I would have gone with 2-2217's, it would have been much more economical, and versatile for that matter. The 2250 doesn't come with tap releases or media, where as the 2217's comes with everything and ready to run. So bascially I paid $209 for the filter, about $80 for the media, and now $70 for the quick releases, when I could have paid $220 total for, 2-2217's....OH well, you win some you lose some (I'm still waiting to win some)......

Howdy,

I always like to have as little clutter in the tank as possible. 2250: One intake, one outlet. Two 2217: Twice the tubing, two different spray bars etc. IMO the great advantage of one big filter over two small ones is the sleeker look of the tank. The money spent soon becomes irrelevant when you think about what you're gonna spend on fish ;)
