I can clear that up for you... The problem is not the bag trapping debris but the fact that it does it in a very small space. a single line in the cannister if you see what I'm talking about. This forms a barrier quickly. Sponge media and the like dont trap the debris all at the same level so they can collect a lot more of it before the filter starts to slow down.

Sounds like they need a bag with a large mesh to it...
 
Okay Scottfree your answer to the backwash is in the eheimparts.com website.. when you click on the canister filter part on the left. you click on the 2250 and compare it to the 2260's the bucket have an extra peice of a drain tap so that acts like your Q backwash..
well anyhow i believe that with the filter bag holding only the eheisubstrats is the best way to go since it takes less time to clean out the filter. which you can pick the bag up with ease and all you have to wash is the eheimech and change the filter floss.. if without baggin the eheisubstrat you have to dig them out and clean them seperately since you should clean them with your aquarium water instead of tap water..
