Ecco's aren't easier to maintenance. For a classic, a back flush will clean it out quite well, and take half the time. C360 have been having some issues, and are based around the design of the Eheim pro 2 series.

Having used both id say the ecco is easier to maintain. Id never thought of trying to back flush the classic but as when you maintain a filter you normally change the filter wool I doubt there would be much benifit to back flushing IMO.
The Eco's are much under rated. Their priming handle is the easiest ive ever used. Its just a shame eheim dont build much bigger versions.

I don't run wool or any fine mech filtration in any of my canisters. That is something better suited in a hob or sump.

Never had a problem in any of my external filters, all eheims have a space at the top exactly for that.
Doesn't matter what they do and don't have space for. Mech filtration needs to be cleaned frequently, which canisters are designed to avoid. Putting the two together is counter-productive.

So you're saying you just have biomedia in your canisters and just backflush it regularly? No mechanical/prefilter to prevent the biomedia from clogging?

Read the above post a lot closer.

I have a 2217 with prefilter-coarse blue- bio pro, in that order. What would be the best way to service? Would you back flush it? Just keep filling it and open the intake repeatedly?
Thanks

i think that the Eheim's are great, ive got a 2215 on my 20 x-tall, and it runs great. I think for a 30 a 2215 would be great, but if your upgrading get a 2217. The only complaint that i have is that you dont get a return tube in the box, and it is something that you definitialy want to have.

However, because you dont want to spend over $100, a 2213 might be your only option. I got my 2215 for ~$115, which is what we get them for at the store + shipping.
