I would use a sponge filter hooked up to an airline myself... You get the benefits of an airstone plus you have an additional back up filter. Why not right?
As far as eheim, I run a 2217 on my 90 gallon and I can break it down for you from an unbiased perspective.
Pros:
Reliable
Silent
Great biological filtration
Pretty easy to clean
Low energy consumption (but more than a comparable aquaclear HOB)
Comes with media
Cons:
Weaker flow compared to similar sized canisters
So-so mechanical filtration
Can be a little difficult to get primed at first
To prime the classics, I hook everything up, except the returns attachment point to the spray bar. Suck on this hose, then attach to the spray bar.
