Eheim Pro 2 2128 substitute media for ehfimech?

Howdy,

using pot scrubbers in a canister is a major waste of filter space. You would have to compact them beyond what's possible to even use them as coarse filter floss (blue pads). They have next to no biosurface as compared to other media, even EhFiMech.

Bottom line: If you ask where to put your pot scrubbers: In the kicthen or in your sump if you have a w/d. They are worthless in a canister.

I just got a 2217 with media for $119 free shipping, no tax from Big Al's. Same filter, older design. Just add a heater for $15. If your budget is as tight as you say it is, this would have been a better choice ...

You have the filter you got and you need to make due with it. Again, pot scrubbers are inadequate media for filtration in a canister. If you do not have the $ for EhFiSubstrat, then fill that canister up with EhFiMech and earmark some Christmas cash for better biomedia.

That one is with media, they have it for less without the media. That is nearly the same price as you paid but you didn't get media.

a cheap way to fill up bio-media is filter floss

it's pretty cheap but it does trap lots of dirt as well. It will clog fast though so it needs to be changed often but it is so cheap...

I have a filstar xp3 canister and use this in my trays
ehfimech, ehfisubstrat in bottom tray
ehfifix in middle tray
nitrate marine sponge to lower nitrate, ehfiturf to make it softer and more acidic and fine filter pad (foam) in top basket to polish water

the filter needs maintenance about every 2 months in my 90 gallon oscar tank

Hm I guess i'll resort from being cheap and buy ehfimech. In that very bottom basket, how big a size of ehfimech should I buy? How bout the 2 other baskets for substratpro?

2 liters of ehfimech for the bottom basket, and 4 Liters of Ehfisubstrat pro for the top two baskets.
