I decided to go with the ehim pro 3 as filtration for my 80 gal :headbang2
It's f-ing expensive but I hear you cant really go wrong with eheim. Being pretty new to canisters i would like to know what media is best and in what order for those of you who have these beasts.

also is this a good set from foster and smith for $149.99:

Filter Media Set includes: 1 Blue (Coarse) filter pad, 1 White (Fine) filter pad, 8 L Ehfisubstrat Pro (4 x 2 L), and 4 L Ehfimech (4 x 1 L).

thanks for the links. 1 more filter pad for alost $50 less...sounds like a good deal to me.

anything different that you do to your eheim media placement other than what they recommend?

Only 1 pad not 2... Used 100micron filter cloth between mech and bio. And 50micron cloth before return.

That is a good package deal, but I'd switch out the white pads for some filter floss. Bottom tray uses mech, top two use substrat pro.

So far I have been happy with my Pro 3, but if you want to up the mech a lot, and the bio a little, a couple hydro IV or IV sponge filters over the intakes will help a lot.

good tip. I also have a spare ac 110 laying around that I may throw on there if the need arises. I imagine (and this better be the case for the cost of the pro 3) that the mech will be ok particularly until my wet pet gets to a reasonable size.

The mech on a pro 3 as it is, is not that great, but with cheap simple modifications the pro 3 can be a killer filter. The biggest thing IMO, is that the eheim runs only 27 watts, where the fx5 is at 51. Huge difference, long term most filters will cost you more than an eheim 2080.
