The mech on a pro 3 as it is, is not that great, but with cheap simple modifications the pro 3 can be a killer filter. The biggest thing IMO, is that the eheim runs only 27 watts, where the fx5 is at 51. Huge difference, long term most filters will cost you more than an eheim 2080.

What size is the lift tube on the 4? Have found that the 5 is 1" but can`t find the 4s size. Want to adapt to sit on the bottom of the tank and have the hose go over Eheims tube.

It's easiest, and best IMO, to just remove the plastic, and run the sponge right on the intakes.

I just got my pro 3e 2078 a couple days ago. i was worried about the mech filtration from reading multiple forums. so far its been great. i filled the media with 1x mech and 2 substartpro leaving the top one empty so i had room to expand in whatever would be nessarry.

so what are we reccomending here? filter floss on the very bottom, 100 micron above each basket, 50 micron on the top and folded over the sides of the top basket and a filter sponge on the intake?

what is the best sponge & what one fits on the intake and does that require any modification with besides removing the plastic strainer?
